Coursework Requirement

Graduation Requirements

To graduate, students must complete 60 credit units and pass all courses. These 60 units include:

  • 8 courses (each worth 6 credits):
    • 2 core courses
    • 6 elective courses
  • 1 capstone project (worth 12 credits)

Programme Structure

The MA in the field of Hong Kong Cultural Studies consists of the following categories of courses:

  • 11 lecture courses (1 core + 10 electives)
  • 1 seminar course (1 core)
  • Capstone project

 

Learning Hours:

  • Each 6-credit course requires the students to have 120–180 hours of learning activities inclusive of 24 contact hours.
  • The 12-credit capstone project requires 240–360 hours, including research, consultations, and writing.

 

Contact Hours:

  • Lecture and seminar courses: 24 hours (2 hours/week for 12 weeks)
  • Capstone project: 11– 16 hours of individual supervision plus research training sessions

 

Overall, the curriculum involves a minimum of 1,200 study hours, with 203–208 contact hours.

1. Lecture Courses (6 credits per course)

  • All courses except HKGS7001 and the capstone are lecture-based.
  • Format: 2-hour weekly lectures for 12 weeks (24 contact hours)
  • Learning hours: 120–180
  • Assessment: 100% coursework; individual paper (≥4,000 words in English)
  • Focus on the latest trends, up-to-date knowledge, and the theoretical discussions on Hong Kong Cultural Studies

 

2. Seminar Course (6 credits)

  • Course: HKGS7001 Hong Kong Cultural Studies: Theories and Research Methods
  • Combines lectures and interactive presentations to develop research skills and apply critical theories
  • Format: 24 contact hours (2 hours/week for 12 weeks)
  • Assessment: 100% coursework; includes an individual oral presentation, a reflective report (1,000 words in English), and a research paper (4,000 words in English)
  • Emphasis on methodology, theory, and independent research skills

 

3. Capstone Experience (12 credits)

  • Students produce either:
    • Academic paper (7,000 words in English), or
    • Media project (8–10 min video + 5,000-word analysis in English)
  • Format: 11–16 contact hours (lectures + consultations)
  • Learning hours: 240–360
  • Assessment: 100% coursework
  • Goal: Develop independent research ability and apply knowledge creatively
